Post Highlights

Plan B, also known as the morning-after pill, is an oral emergency contraceptive pill that helps to prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex. It is an over-the-counter (O.T.C.) contraceptive approved by the F.D.A.

It consists of a single active ingredient, Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg, a steroid hormone, which has a function similar to progesterone (i.e. regulation of menstrual cycle)

This pill prevents pregnancy by delaying or stopping the ovulation cycle and is recommended to take sooner after sexual intercourse for its better efficacy.

How Does It Work?

Plan B can work in the following ways-

  1. Stops the release of an egg from the ovaries
  2. It stops a fertilized egg from implantation in the uterus.

However, if implantation has already taken place before the administration of Plan B, this pill does not work.

How Should You Use Plan B?

This pill should be consumed with a glass full of water 3 days after having unprotected sex. It should be taken with meals and not on an empty stomach.

However, it is advised to read all instructions mentioned on the product package or in the leaflet before self-medicating this pill or taking it as recommended by the doctor.

Where Can You Get Plan B?

Plan B is an O.T.C. drug, readily available without prescription for all people, regardless of age.

It can be taken from an online provider, any local pharmacy, or health department clinics.

Is The Morning Pill Effective?

Plan B is a well-known contraceptive to avoid pregnancy. It shows the highest efficacy if taken within 72 hours after the sexual intercourse, i.e. it reduces the risk of pregnancy by 75-89%.

What Factors Can Affect The Efficacy Of Plan B?

Plan B might show less effectiveness in women near the ovulation stage or with a more significant body mass index (B.M.I.).

Breastfeeding women can use plan B without any adverse effects.
Plan B emergency contraceptive is ineffective against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Plan B can be taken even after 72 hours, but these pills are comparatively less effective after this period.
Yes, there are chances to get pregnant even after taking Plan B. If you take Plan B after unprotected intercourse and then have sex again, you'll need to take another pill.

How Long Is Plan B Effective?

Plan B contraceptive pill is most effective if taken within the first 3 days after having unprotected sex. Once administered, this pill is effective for a maximum of 5 days, after which the hormone (progestin) within the pill is eliminated from the body.

The maximum time that hormone remains inside the body coincides with the period that sperm can stay within the female reproductive system, i.e. nearly five to six days.

Dosage For Plan B

Take one Plan B tablet as soon as possible within 3 days after having unprotected intercourse. Its second dose should be taken 12 hours after the first dose.

Plan B can be used at any time during the menstrual cycle.

  1. Heavy menstrual bleeding
  2. Vomiting
  3. Dizziness, fatigue, headache
  4. Breast tenderness

  3. HIV drugs (Ritonavir)

Some generic versions of an emergency contraceptive are available, which are as effective as Plan B, which includes-

  2.  My Way- This should also be taken as soon as possible after engaging in sexual activity. Women with severe abdominal pain should avoid taking this pill due to the chances of ectopic pregnancy
